Barn Builders is pleased to announce a recent addition to their line of new barns; the Legacy Round Barn. “The round barn is an American icon and we are very pleased to offer our customers something that no other barn company does”, states Bruce Willemsen, the company’s owner.
The round barn is a tribute to American architecture; as it is not found anywhere else in the world. George Washington built the first known circular barn which was a 16-sided structure in 1792. It took two years to complete the 52’ in diameter barn and had two stories plus a walk-out ground floor.
The first true round barn was built in 1826 in Hancock, Massachusetts by the Shakers. It was 21’ high and was 275’ in diameter. The barn was 3 levels high and could house 52 head of cattle comfortably. There was also enough room on the circular driveway floor for two hay wagons to pass each other. The Shaker barn which was built entirely of stone cost approximately $10,000.
Although Barn Builders’ Legacy Round Barn is not as large as the Shaker barn, great care has been taken to insure that it follows the architectural integrity of its historical predecessors. The Legacy Round Barn completes the line of new barns that Barn Builders offers. “All of Barn Builders’ barns have been historically researched, taking great care to ensure as much authenticity as possible. We use full dimension, rough-cut heavy timbers from small family-owned sawmills and construction is done much the same way as it was done over a hundred years ago.” states Willemsen.
Other barns in the New Barn line-up at Barn Builders include two smaller barns, the Carriage House and the Homestead Barn; which come in both 1-story and 1 ˝ stories and two larger barns which are a full 2-stories high; the Iron Horse Barn and the Lake Praia ire Gambrel.
